Practical Volunteering

Practical Project - Outdoors

The charity supports adults with learning disabilities and mental health needs in London. In this case, the project took place at a home to 5 adults with learning disabilities. Most of the residents have some form of mobility issue but staff at the home work hard to ensure the people they support get out into the community, have fun, make friends and connect with the wider world. The volunteers created a sensory garden for the residents including clearing the space, building raised beds, paths and fencing and completing the garden with suitable sensory items and plants. Training, equipment and materials are provided and so no experience is needed by volunteers for this type of project.

Conservation Project - Outdoors

This nature reserve consists of 33 acres of mature, broadleaved woodland and meadow. It is also an educational resource to 7000+ school children every year who use the Park as an outdoor classroom. Its Friends group was established to encourage greater use of this inner urban green space as a sanctuary for people, a place of biodiversity, while protecting & preserving the historic content. It is dependent upon the work of volunteers and there is an ongoing challenge to maintain the balance between Nature conservation and develop the park for its use by the whole community. Volunteers were involved in removing invasive species and cutting down small trees, changing the soil fertility to encourage wild flowers, tree planning and improvements to footpaths.

Again no experience is needed for this type of volunteering activity as equipment and guidance is provided.

Practical Project - Indoors

This charitable housing trust provides essential housing for low income families and individuals, many of whom are elderly and vulnerable. It is a community led housing association that provides support to its residents and promotes active resident involvement helping the quality of life of the residents and the Community as a whole. The Community has a number of old and infirm residents who are unable to maintain their property and the project involved the team working at a number of properties to complete some urgently needed redecoration.  Materials, equipment and guidance are provided for volunteers so no previous experience is needed.
